Chelsea Manning petitions for presidential pardon

Hagerstown, Maryland – Army Pvt. Chelsea Manning is petitioning for a presidential pardon after releasing restricted documents to WikiLeaks. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the Petition for Pardon/Commutation of Sentence was sent to President Barack Obama by Manning’s attorney on Tuesday through the US Department of Justice and also to Army Secretary John M. McHugh.

Manning is quoted as writing in the petition, “When I chose to disclose classified information, I did so out of a love for my country and sense of duty to others.”

Manning, is currently incarcerated at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. While serving a 35-year sentence. She was convicted in July on 20 counts linked to the disclosure of the classified information when she worked as an intelligence analyst in 2010 in Iraq.

Manning, whose legal name is Bradley Manning, recently revealed that she would be seeking to undergo hormone replacement therapy and considered herself a woman.
