Abilene, TX — A fatal work-related accident left a Union Pacific employee dead on Sunday, August 28, 2011. The rail accident occurred while the worker was inspecting a track near Jeep Road and Old U.S. 40 at around 4 p.m. in Dickinson County, reported KAKE.com.
According to officials, two vehicles collided just east of Abilene, which involved a hi-rail vehicle and a car. Hi-rail vehicles are self-propelled and are typically a pick-up truck, which has rail wheels fitted to the truck so it can legally be driven on railroad tracks, as well as roads.
The Union Pacific employee was reportedly driving the hi-rail vehicle westbound on the tracks when a southbound vehicle hit him.
Responding emergency crews pronounced the rail worker dead.
The driver of the other vehicle was rushed to a local hospital for treatment. The motorist’s identity, injuries and current condition was not reported.
Investigations into the automobile accident are underway.
