U.S. – Two Muslim truck drivers who refused to transport alcohol as directed by their employer, and were subsequently fired as a result have been awarded $240,000 in an employment discrimination lawsuit. The Washington Post reported that the plaintiffs were awarded $200,000 in punitive damages and $40,000 in compensatory damages for the case.
The case was filed on behalf of the drivers by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which argued that the employer failed to reasonable accommodate the workers when the accommodations could have been provided without undue hardship to the employer and others. The company, Star Transport, was noted to have swapped loads between drivers often prior.
The report notes; however, that the company went out of business this year, leaving open questions about who will be liable for paying the judgment. As stated in The Washington Post article, “Whether the men collect their money is another story. Star Transport went out of business earlier this year and it’s unknown who is now responsible for the judgment.”
