Chicago – A man was shot and killed Saturday by an off-duty Chicago police officer who had reportedly ran into his 4-year-old daughter in a motorcycle accident shortly prior. As reported by the Chicago Tribune, authorities say Christopher Middleton, 26, approached and hit the officer after the accident, in which the officer purportedly attempted to avoid hitting the child, but ran into her and her 18-year-old cousin.

The officer reportedly shot Middleton in the groin during a scuffle in which a spokesperson for the village of Maywood claimed he feared for his life.

The mother of the child involved in the incident, Tanya Jones, who is stated to have witnessed some of the confrontation, is quoted in the report as stating of Middleton, “I saw him take his last breath… He was a father trying to protect his daughter. He was never a violent person.”

The child was treated at Loyola University Medical Center for her injuries.
