New York – In an effort to put a stop to phony product reviews being placed on its marketplace website, Amazon has taken legal action. The Associated Press reports that the company has filed suit against over 1,000 people for offering to post positive reviews for money.

The complaint was recently filed in state court in Seattle. The complaint asserts that some companies are attempting to boost their sales with the use of commissioned five star reviews. Forrester Research data shows that 45 percent of consumers take product reviews into consideration when considering an online purchase.

Retailers have been making an effort to crack down on bogus reviews that companies pay for. The recent Amazon complaint alleges that the review writers promise five-star recommendations to companies that sell products on Amazon’s website.

The lawsuit is seeking unspecified damages and an order that prohibits the individuals in question from submitting fake reviews, accusing the offenders of violating Amazon’s terms of service.
