North Carolina – A driver charged in connection with the death of a toddler and an unborn child of a pastor has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter. As reported by PEOPLE, Matthew Deans, 29, received a sentence of one to three years in prison plus three years of probation for the crime, which stems from a car crash that occurred in May.
Deans was reportedly traveling in a box truck while making a seafood delivery when he failed to slow his speed while approaching stopped traffic. He created a chain reaction crash after colliding into the stopped vehicles.
Deans stated while pleading guilty in the case “There's not enough words to explain how sorry I am. I will improve my life and make it better… I will live better for both Reed and Dobbs.”
The report says Dean had only less than five hours of sleep before traveling prior to the crash and also tested positive for trace amounts of painkillers.
Gentry Eddings, the father of the toddler killed, is quoted as stating to Deans “We know it was not your intention for them to die – that's important… Mistakes were made. I sincerely forgive you.”
