Surgery required for Amarillo police officer post crash

Amarillo, TX – An Amarillo police officer who sustained critical injuries in a head-on collision recently underwent required surgery. Amarillo Globe News reported that the officer, Justin Scherlen, was injured in a two-vehicle crash on Tuesday near the Southwest 34th Avenue South Georgia Street intersection.

The crash occurred between Scherlen’s vehicle and a Jeep Wrangler at approximately 6:45 in the morning. The Jaws of Life was used by Amarillo firefighters to free the officer from the vehicle.

Officer Scherlen was transported to Northwest Texas Hospital with multiple injuries and rushed into surgery immediately after the incident.

Amarillo Police Cpl. Sean Slover said of the investigation into the crash “The preliminary information is that the Jeep had no lights on and crossed left of center into the officer’s lane.”

The investigation of the accident is ongoing.
