California – Google has placed a ban on sexually explicit content on its blog publishing service. As reported by WebProNews, the company recently made the announcement saying that those who operate blogs on Blogger that are pornographic in nature will see their blog set to private effective March 23.

Current blogs that contain sexually explicit content will reportedly not be removed, but will only be viewable to admins and users they are specifically shared with. Those created after March 23 will reportedly be at risk of being removed altogether.

Google is quoted as stating in its announcement, “We’ll still allow nudity if the content offers a substantial public benefit, for example in artistic, educational, documentary, or scientific contexts.”

As noted in the report, Google previously implemented new rules regarding blogs that profited from adult ads but allowed for the continued posting of adult content that was appropriately marked. Some speculate that the recent decision could make bloggers turn to sites that have less restrictions regarding adult content such as Tumblr.
