U.S. – Olympic runner Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to prison for the shooting death of his girlfriend. As reported by Good Morning America, Pistorius, who was convicted in the 2013 Valentine’s Day shooting of Reeva Steenkamp, received a 5-year prison sentence for her death.

Pistorius, 27, was also given a three-year suspended sentence for a weapons charge.

Judge Thokozile Masipa rejected an argument by the defense that Pistorius, who has prosthetic legs, was not suitable for prison due to his vulnerability.

Masipa is quoted as stating in court, “I heard witness after witness over-emphasizing the accused’s vulnerability…Yes, the accused is vulnerable, but he also has excellent coping skills. He really saw himself as disabled [but] worked hard, and became respected worldwide.”
