California – A permit will now be required for all of the self-driving cars being tested on California roads. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the Department of Motor Vehicles has developed new rules that require the vehicles to be registered and issued testing permits.

The agency’s new rules went into effect on Tuesday.

The law follows the passage of similar ones in Nevada and Florida. Self-driving cars are also reportedly being tested in Michigan; however, the state does not require special permits for the vehicles to be tested on public roads.

James Fackler, assistant administrator for the Michigan Department of State, which registers motor vehicles, is quoted by the AP as stating that major carmakers General Motors, Toyota, Chrysler, and Ford are “all running around here with some form of autonomous vehicle.”
