Houston, TX – In a lawsuit filed against Patti LaBelle, the singer’s bodyguard stands accused of beating up a former West Point cadet. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the lawsuit alleges that the veteran R&B singer ordered the attack while the cadet was waiting to be picked up at a Houston airport.

Richard King claims he sustained a brain injury in the attack, and was no longer able to attend the military academy afterward. According to the lawsuit, King was attacked by Efrem Holmes and others in an unprovoked incident.

An attorney for LaBelle, Geoffrey Bracken, says that King instigated the incident by hurling racial insults at the singer and punching her son.

Holmes was acquitted in November of related misdemeanor assault charges filed against him.

Unspecified damages are being sought in the case.
