North Dakota Oil Field Accident Kills Vernal Man

Mountrail County, ND — An accident at a North Dakota oil field killed a Vernal man on Friday, March 2, 2012, when he fell 80 feet. The work-related accident occurred at Frontier Drilling Rig No. 19 in Mountrail County around 11 p.m., reported the Vernal Express.

The Mountrail County Sheriff’s Department reported that Jason McDonald, 22, was working near the top of a derrick when he fell approximately 80 feet to the rig floor below.

Responding emergency crews rushed McDonald to the Mountrail County Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

It is unknown at this time what caused McDonald to fall.

McDonald was wearing a safety harness, as required by safety regulations, but the catch wire broke.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are investigating the fatal workplace accident.

The North Dakota Forensic Medical Examiner’s office is conducting an autopsy.
