Arizona – A skydiver who attempted to participate in a record 222-person formation jump died after his parachute malfunctioned. As reported by Reuters, a spokesperson for the Arizona skydiving facility, SkyDive Arizona, commented on the death on Thursday.

SkyDive spokeswoman Jocelyn Bernatchez is quoted as stating of the incident, “The malfunctioning parachute was released too low to allow the reserve parachute to fully open.”

The skydiver was among 222 veteran skydivers from more than 20 countries, who were seeking to break the record for the number of people to complete two formations in the air prior to their parachutes being deployed. The previous record had been set last year with 110 skydivers.

The death on Thursday is reportedly the fourth in the last four months resulting from an attempt at breaking a record in skydiving.
