Illinois – A group of Illinois teachers and public school officials have joined together in a class action lawsuit in an effort to block a new pension reform law. As reported by Reuters, the lawsuit filed on Friday seeks to void the law on grounds that included pension benefits cuts are in violation of the state constitution.

Governor Pat Quinn signed a measure to make changes to current and retired teacher pensions earlier this month after it was passed by the Illinois General Assembly. The law reduces pension cost-of-living increases and raises retirement ages among other things.

Quinn, Illinois Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka and the Illinois Teachers’ Retirement System’s (TRS) board of trustees are named as defendants in the lawsuit. The reforms are set to become effective in June.
