Retired federal agent convicted in death of girlfriend’s estranged husband

Denton – A retired federal agent has been convicted of murder in the death of the estranged husband of his girlfriend. As reported by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Gary Landers, 58, was found guilty by a Denton County jury in the 2010 shooting death of Richard Benovic, 49.

As noted in the report, the shooting occurred during a custody exchange near the Denton police station. An altercation occurred in the parking lot, which resulted in Landers pulling out a handgun and shooting several times.

Benovic reportedly died at the scene. The sentencing phase for Landers in the case had yet to begin at the time of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s report.
