Johannesburg – President Barack Obama arrived Tuesday in South Africa to attend a memorial held for the late anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Obama and first lady Michelle Obama made the 16-hour trip to the country joined by former President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura, and former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Air Force One.
Mandela, who served as President of South Africa from 1994-1999, passed away last week at the age of 95. The president was among those set to speak at the memorial service, at which tens of thousands of South Africans were in attendance.
Ben Rhodes, Obama’s deputy national security adviser, is quoted as stating of Mandela, “He obviously is cemented in our memory as an icon, but he was an extraordinary political leader, an extraordinary leader of a movement to bring about change.”
