Jacksonville, Florida – A Florida school board is considering taking the name of Ku Klux Klan founder Nathan Bedford Forest off of a primarily black high school. As reported by ABC News, over 160,000 signatures have been obtained from people across the country on a petition started on Change.org regarding the name change of the school in the Duval County Public Schools system.
Omotayo Richmond, who started the petition challenging Superintendent Nikolai Vitti, is quoted in the report as stating of not allowing his daughter to attend the high school, “It just wouldn’t happen… I believe it’s outrageous that this could even be questioned by anybody … that anybody could even come to the defense of this man.”
Marsha Oliver, the communications chief for the Duval County School District, has purported that a Change.org petition would not impact the district’s decision to change the school’s name. Jacksonville community members have reportedly unsuccessfully made attempts to get the name changed before.
