New York – The oldest woman to run in the New York marathon passed away a day after completing the race. As reported by AFP, Joy Johnson, 86, stumbled and hit her head during Sunday’s race, but declined insistence that she go to the hospital after she visited the medical tent upon completion of the race.
Johnson had reportedly ran in the race for 25 years consecutively. Chris Weiller, a spokesman for organizers New York Road Runners, is quoted by AFP as stating of the mother and grandmother, “We’re saddened to hear about the passing of Joy. She finished her 25th on Sunday and she was just such an inspiration to us all.”
Diana Boydston, Johnson’s youngest daughter, is quoted as stating via telephone to AFP about her mother, “She was a woman of great faith, that was first in her life, faith and family and then probably running. She really loved to run. She made a lot of friends that way all over the world.”
Johnson would have turned 87 on Christmas Day.
