New York – The National Rifle Association has stated it supports a lawsuit filed to strike down a massive government surveillance program by civil rights groups. As reported by Reuters, the NRA stated Wednesday that it backed the suit, asserting it poses a threat to the privacy rights of gun owners.
The group claims the program, which would involve collecting and storing phone and Internet records of telecommunications companies, may facilitate the government creating a gun owner registry.
The American Civil Liberties Union filed the lawsuit against U.S. National Intelligence Director James Clapper and other officials after plans for the program were revealed through documents leaked with other classified information by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden.
The ACLU has stated it welcomed the support of the NRA in the case. Jameel Jaffer, one of the ACLU attorneys on the suit, is quoted by Reuters as stating, “Americans from across the political spectrum value individual privacy…The philosophical roots may differ, but I think that is a widely shared American value.”
