El Salvador – An El Salvadorian woman who was denied an abortion by the country’s Supreme Court last week has given birth to a baby girl via an early cesarean section. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the child of the 22-year-old woman, whose doctors recommended a medical abortion for due to her deteriorating health, was born without a brain and has been given little chances of survival.

The woman, who is referred to as Beatriz to protect her privacy, suffers from kidney failure and lupus. The Health Ministry made the decision last week to allow the C-section following the court’s ruling to prohibit the abortion in accordance with the country’s strict laws regarding the procedure.

The case has garnered international media attention.
