Florida – A Florida teenager is facing criminal charges over her same-sex relationship with another student. As reported by the Huffington Post, Kaitlyn Hunt, 18, was arrested in February after the parents of her girlfriend, 15, pressed charges against her.

Hunt faces felony counts of “lewd and lascivious battery on a child 12 to 16” due to her relationship with the student. The parents of the 15-year-old were also successful in their efforts to have Hunt removed from school prior to graduation.

Kelley Hunt-Smith, Kaitlyn Hunt’s mother, is quoted in the report as making the statement in a Facebook post, “These people never came to us as parents, never tried to speak to us… and tell us they had a problem with the girls dating… …They were out to destroy my daughter. [They] feel like my daughter ‘made’ their daughter gay.”

The case has led to public outcry, and online initiatives on Facebook and Change.org urging the Indian River County State Attorney’s Office to drop the charges against Hunt.
