China – In 2010, a baby was born in China with what appeared to be a large tumor. On further examination, the mass was determined to be two separate masses. Doctors now say that the baby was born “pregnant” with twin fetuses.

The twin fetuses were connected within the abdomen of the baby through an umbilical cord, which was attached to a mass that appeared to be a placenta. Both fetuses had spines, well-developed rib cages, intestines, and under-developed brain tissue.

As reported by WebProNews, a local doctor told the South China Morning Post, “Since it is impossible for the little girl to have conceived the pregnancy on her own, the fertilization of the twin fetuses, of course, belongs to her parents, which has gone to the wrong place.”

As noted in the report, the condition, which is called fetus-in-fetu, is rare. There have been less than 200 cases reported in the world. It is unknown how such a pregnancy occurs, but it is believed that the baby absorbs its own twin or in this case, the baby was likely a triplet and absorbed its two siblings.
