Philadelphia – A one-month old baby was mauled by at least three family ferrets inside of a Darby home. As reported by NBC Philadelphia news, the baby was sitting buckled in a car seat when the incident occurred.

Part of the child’s face was eaten off as a result of the attack. Darby Police Chief Robert Smythe is quoted as stating of the incident, “This is the most horrific thing I’ve seen happen to a child 45 years in this town… The ferrets did chew the infant’s nose, top lip and cheek area. They had eaten that area away.”

According to the report, the mother of the child was upstairs when the mauling began and it remains unclear how long it took her to respond to the baby’s cries.

The girl underwent emergency surgery after being taken to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The birds were reportedly destroyed and tested for rabies.

Smythe has requested of the Delaware County District Attorney that charges be approved against the parents.
