San Francisco – An off duty police officer who found more than $125,000 in cash on a roadway returned the money to its owner. As reported by NBC Bay Area, the California Highway Patrol sergeant made the discovery after swerving to avoid hitting two bags that were in the middle of a Concord roadway.

According to CHP Contra Costa area spokesman John Fransen, the officer retrieved the bags after making a U-turn, and looked inside. The authorities were then alerted after the officer found the cash inside.

In a prepared statement, the officer said of returning the money, “I am paid to uphold the law and it’s my job to set the example whether I’m working or not…I am happy to hear the rightful owner was identified and that the money has been returned.”
