Washington – Bill and Melinda Gates have offered up to $1 million combined to a coalition seeking to reduce gun violence. As reported by WebProNews, the billionaire couple offered the funds to The Washington Alliance for Gun Responsibility, which has proposed Initiative 594, to make it mandatory for private gun sellers in Washington State to undergo background checks.

The initiative is set to be voted on by citizens in November, after previously failing to pass the state legislature.

The Gates’ are quoted in the report as saying of the measure in a statement, “We believe it will be an effective and balanced approach to improving gun safety in our state by closing existing loopholes for background checks.”
