Portugal – A couple died while taking selfies at the cliffs of Cabo Da Roca in Portugal and falling. As reported by The Washington Post, investigators say the couple fell into the Atlantic Ocean while taking pictures of themselves in the area.
The bodies of the man and woman were recovered on Sunday after a search for them was suspended the day prior due to bad weather.
As noted in the report, distractions from digital devices that place many at risk have been the focus of a number of public safety campaigns enacted by government agencies and car companies.
For example, the Department of Transportation launched an anti-distracted driving initiative earlier in the year. Others have been aimed at reducing the incidence of people taking selfies while driving.
According to a 2013 Virginia Tech Transportation Institute study, certain tasks while driving, including touching or looking at a mobile device, increase the chances of a driver becoming involved in a crash by three times.
