Washington – The White House has stated that new sanctions would be imposed against Russia by the United States and the European Union. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the decision comes following accusations that Russia has increased its military presence at the Ukraine border and other acts.

President Barack Obama and leaders of other nations held a discussion of the issue during a joint video teleconference early this week, days after a Malaysia Airlines plane was shot down in eastern Ukraine. The attack, which killed nearly 300 people, has been blamed on pro-Moscow separatists.

Tony Blinken, Obama’s deputy national security adviser, is quoted by the AP as stating of the issue, β€œIt’s precisely because we’ve not yet seen a strategic turn from Putin that we believe it’s absolutely essential to take additional measures, and that’s what the Europeans and the United States intend to do this week.”
