India – Dental surgeons removed a record setting number of teeth from a 17-year-old patient during one procedure. As reported by Examiner, 232 teeth were removed during the procedure in Mumbai on a patient suffering from complex odontoma, which is a condition that occurs when a tumor develops in the mouth made of the tooth forming components.

The mass of teeth in Indian teenager Ashik Gavai’s jaw was revealed from tests and x-rays after he began to suffer unbearable swelling.

Sunanda Dhivare-Palwankar, the head of dentistry at JJ Hospital, is quoted as stating of the procedure, “We operated on Monday and it took us almost seven hours… We thought it may be a simple surgery but once we opened it there were multiple pearl-like teeth inside the jaw bone.”

Dhivare-Palwankar is further quoted as stating of the massive number of teeth removed, “According to medical literature available on the condition, it is known to affect the upper jaw and a maximum of 37 teeth have been extracted from the tumor in the past. But in Ashik’s case, the tumor was found deep in the lower jaw and it had hundreds of teeth…I think it could be a world record.”
