Uttar Pradesh – The exhumation of the bodies of two teenagers in Uttar Pradesh who were allegedly raped before being found hanging from a tree in May was put on hold due to the rain. As reported by Reuters, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) suspended the investigation Saturday after the burial area was affected by heavy rainfall.

The exhumation was scheduled after local police suggested the deaths of the teen girls may have been an “honor killing” enacted by family members that did not involve a sexual assault.

Five men, including two police officers, have been arrested in connection with the deaths of the girls, who were cousins aged 14 and 15 years old.

Activists say sex crimes against women and young girls is a widespread issue in India, and often involve females who are from poor communities.
