Honolulu – A man convicted of murder for the death of his 5-year-old daughter avoided the death penalty after his wife testified about her role in repeated abuse of the girl. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), jurors said testimony from the girl’s stepmother, who admitted to stomping on the child, led to some partly blaming her for her death.

Delilah Williams testified that she and her husband Naeem Williams, a former soldier, regularly subjected the child to abuse that included beatings and withholding food from her.

Delilah Williams is set to receive a 20-year prison sentence, which will include time already served, in accordance with a plea agreement.

Naeem Williams will be sentenced in October.
