Washington – Retail sales of recreational marijuana will now be allowed in Washington state after officials began issuing licenses on Monday. As reported by Reuters, more than 300 applications have been accepted by state regulators, with about 20 stores being expected to open on Tuesday.

According to the Washington State Liquor Control Board, a number of the applicants have yet to pass final inspections. Retail sales of marijuana have also been prohibited in some municipalities.

The licenses will permit some approved retailers to begin selling cannabis after 24 hours. In accordance with the law, customers will be allowed to purchase up to one ounce of marijuana, 16 ounces of solid form marijuana-infused product, or 72 ounces of liquid form marijuana-infused product.

Washington is the second state to pass legislation permitting retail sales of recreational marijuana in the U.S.
