California – A San Jose man igniting illegal fireworks on the Fourth of July holiday blew both of his hands off as a result of a premature explosion. As reported by the San Jose Mercury News, Officer Albert Morales of the San Jose Police Department said the injured man, who is in his 40s, is expected to survive following the incident.

According to police, the type of device was not identified. Morales is quoted in the report as stating of the explosive, “It would have had to have been something pretty powerful.”

Another similar incident also took place the same night in a nearby city, resulting in injuries to two men. Witness reportedly saw the Sunnyvale men attempting to ignite a mortar-type firework that went off while it was still in their hands. One of the men’s fingers were blown off his left hand, and the other sustained injuries to his right hand. Both were taken to the hospital.
