Boston – A lawyer for the New England Patriots says he doesn’t believe the team owes former tight end Aaron Hernandez any money. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Attorney Andrew Phelan says Hernandez’s contract with the team was terminated prior to him being charged with murder last year, and he was not due a $3.25 million contract signing bonus.
Phelan is quoted by the AP as stating during a court hearing on wrongful death lawsuits by the families of two men whom Hernandez stands accused of killing, “The Patriots believe under the terms of that contract that they owe not another penny to Mr. Hernandez.”
An attorney for the families requested that the NFL team be barred from paying the bonus in the event that an arbitrator makes an order for it to be paid to him.
Hernandez, who stands accused in the deaths of three people, has pleaded not guilty on each count.
