New York – The family of Avonte Oquendo has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city of Queens following the 14-year-old autistic teen’s death. As reported by the New York Daily News, the family asserts in the lawsuit that the city and others were negligent in allowing Avonte to leave his school in Long Island City, which led to his death.

Avonte’s body was found, badly decomposed three months after his disappearance last October. The cause of death was undeterminable by the city Medical Examiner.

In addition to the city, the Department of Education, NYPD, and several individuals from the school Avonte attended have been named in the suit.

The lawsuit, which is seeking unspecified damages, was filed in Queens Supreme Court.
