California – California gunman Elliot Rodger was reportedly visited by police prior to going on a shooting rampage that resulted in the deaths of six people and injuries of several others. As reported by Reuters, officers knew about disturbing videos Rodger had posted online, but had not checked them prior to the incident.

Rodger died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head after the killing spree which occurred near the University of California campus in Santa Barbara on May 22.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office released a timeline showing the police responded to a welfare check call from a mental health worker in the county weeks prior. Rodgers was asked about the videos during an encounter with officers who found him outside of his apartment.

The sheriff’s office is quoted in the report as stating, “Sheriff’s deputies concluded that Rodger was not an immediate threat to himself or others, and that they did not have cause to place him on an involuntary mental health hold, or to enter or search his residence.”

The statement further reads, “The sheriff’s office has determined that the deputies who responded handled the call in a professional manner consistent with state law and department policy.”
