Oregon – An Oregon man reportedly told authorities that he caused a three-car crash after holding his breath and fainting in a highway tunnel. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Daniel J. Calhon, 19, admitted to investigators that he fainted while driving in the Dennis L. Edwards Tunnel on Highway 26, leading his vehicle to drift across the centerline and have a head-on collision with a Ford Explorer. A pickup hit Calhon’s 1990 Toyota Camry after both vehicles ran into tunnel walls.

Neither the driver nor passenger of the pickup were hurt in the accident. Calhon, his passenger, and the two people in the Explorer were all transported to area hospitals to be treated for non life-threatening injuries.

Calhon received a citation for reckless driving, fourth-degree assault, and reckless endangerment. Police say they are unsure why he was holding his breath.
