New Zealand – A janitor who found more than $100,000 in a toilet and reported it to authorities will be allowed to keep a majority of it. As reported by the Herald Sun, a magistrate ruled that Chamindu Amarsinghe will get $81,597 and the state will receive $19,500 of the money found while Amarsinghe was cleaning at Channel 9’s Docklands headquarters in 2011.

Amarsinghe, who is now studying IT, is quoted as stating of hearing that he would receive the money, “I was speechless.”

Magistrate Michael Smith, who determined that Amarsinghe should receive a significant chunk of the cash, is quoted as stating, “There’s no reason why such honesty should go unrewarded.”

Detective Senior Constable Daniel Thorne, who investigated the case, is further quoted as stating to the Herald Sun of agreeing with the magistrate’s decision, “All the guys in the office felt the same. He’s a struggling student who straight-up didn’t even think of pocketing it.”
