Gypsum, Colorado – A 13-year-old boy who investigators say shot and killed his father lived alone with the body in his family’s home for several days. As reported by CBS4, the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office has accused the teen of committing the crime and trying to conceal it by calling into his father’s job to report him as sick.

Joseph Kelly Jr. and his son Kai Kelly had lived in the Gypsum home for over a year, according to neighbors, prior to the recent incident. A supervisor from Joseph Kelly Jr.’s job called police after becoming suspicious about his absence from work. His son reportedly admitted to a responding deputy who visited the home that his father was deceased.

Eagle County Sheriff Joseph Hoy is quoted in the report as stating, “The juvenile answered the door and told deputies that his 50-year-old father was deceased in the residence.”

Kai Kelly, who has been charged with first-degree murder, is reportedly in a Jefferson County juvenile facility.
