California – An essay assignment requiring middle school students in Southern California’s Rialto Unified School District to give their point of view about whether the Holocaust was a real event or not has garnered major public backlash. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), several groups voiced objections to the school about the assignment, and an unidentified caller has made death threats in relation to the matter, which police are investigating.

San Bernardino County district spokeswoman Syeda Jafri is quoted as stating of the project, “The Holocaust should be taught in classrooms with sensitivity and profound consideration to the victims who endured the atrocities committed… We believe in the words of George Santayana, those who cannot learn from history are bound to repeat it.”

Jafri further noted that a team of teachers is set to meet to make revisions to the assignment.
