New Orleans – A federal judge has ordered the return of an award for a fraudulent 2010 BP oil spill damage claim. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), claimant Casey Thonn and her lawyers were ordered to pay back $357,000 awarded to her for seafood losses after an investigation found the claim had been based on fraudulent tax returns.

U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier agreed with the recommendation of former FBI director Louis Freeh, who conducted the investigation, that the money be returned, and issued the order on Tuesday.

Barbier is quoted by the AP as writing in the decision, β€œIn light of this evidence and Thonn’s failure to rebut it, the Court finds that the current record is sufficient to support a finding that Thonn committed fraud, without an evidentiary hearing.”
