Massachusetts – Hip-hop artist Benzino, whose real name is Raymond Scott, was shot over the weekend during his mother’s funeral procession. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), his nephew, Gai Scott, 36, has pleaded not guilty after being charged with armed assault with intent to murder.

Scott says he shot his uncle in self-defense, his attorney stated on Monday. Jon Ciraulo, Scott’s lawyer, is quoted as stating, “When the dust settles with respect to this case, it’s going to be abundantly clear that Mr. Scott, a licensed gun owner, was acting in self-defense and in defense of his family.”

Benzino, 48, did not identify who shot him, but stated the person opened fire while he was on his way to pick up a friend and came upon the procession. He was released from South Shore Hospital in Weymouth on Monday.

Benzino is part of the cast of the VH1 reality show “Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta,” and Hip-Hop Weekly magazine’s CEO.
