Boston – A Massachusetts man who has spent decades behind bars for murder is making the claim that he was framed by former organized crime figure James “Whitey” Bulger. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Fred Weichel is now seeking a new trial stating he can provide corroboration for his claim.

Boston attorney Michael Ricciuti, who is representing Weichel, is quoted by the AP as stating, “The bottom line is he didn’t do it.

“It’s clear that there is not proof beyond a reasonable doubt. They can say a jury convicted him — that is factually true — but the standard is if a jury had all the evidence we have now, would it make a difference? There is no way you can look at that and say let’s indict Weichel. It just doesn’t make any sense.”

Weichel was convicted in the 1980 killing of Robert LaMonica. A judge previously denied his request for a new trial in 1991. Years later, he was granted a request, but the ruling was reversed in 2006 by the state’s highest court.
