Washington – The United States has sanctioned the wife of jailed Mexican drug lord, Miguel Angel Trevino. As reported by Reuters, the U.S. froze the assets and banned American companies from doing business with the medical supply firm of Juanita del Carmen Rios on Friday.

Trevino, leader of the Zetas organization, which has been blamed for a number of Mexican drug gang related atrocities, was arrested last July after a raid. The arrest was touted as a victory in the fight against gang violence for Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.

Adam Szubin, a Treasury official who helps oversee the sanctions programs of the department, is quoted by Reuters as calling the actions against Rios and her firm an effort “to weaken and ultimately collapse the financial infrastructure of this ruthless cartel.”
