New York – New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio received criticism from parents, a teachers union and others for allowing schools to remain open in blizzard conditions Thursday. As reported by Reuters, Blasio defended the decision stating forecasts did not indicate there was a necessity to close the schools.

Malkie Grozalsky, 43, who is a mother of three, is quoted as stating on Thursday, “Schools should have absolutely been closed today. The mayor issued a hazardous travel alert and told everyone to stay home if they could, but it’s okay for teachers and students? Ridiculous!”

Blasio is quoted by Reuters as stating to reporters of his decision, “I look at this from a number of different perspectives including that of a public school parent, which I have been for the last 14 years.”

As noted in the report, the National Weather Service indicated that 9.5 inches of snow had fallen in Manhattan’s Central Park by midday on Thursday.
