Mobile, Alabama – A woman was ordered to stop breastfeeding her daughter inside of an Alabama courtroom. As reported by WPMI LOCAL 15 News, Gina Harris said that shortly after she began nursing her child, staff within the Bay Haas Court building told her to stop.

Harris said she walked out of the courtroom that day to avoid further issues, but says she “will come back and nurse my baby” with a printout of the law that says she is allowed to do so in any location.

As noted in the report, Alabama Code, Section 22-1-13 states, “A mother may breastfeed her child in any location, public or private, where the mother is otherwise authorized to be present.”

Judge George Brown has stated that his officers acted to avoid a potential disturbance in court, and that he had never witnessed a woman in his courtroom breastfeeding.
