Alaska – A citizens’ group recently submitted thousands of signatures to the state election office in an effort to legalize marijuana in Alaska. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the group submitted 46,000 signatures hoping that the state will become the nation’s third to legalize recreational marijuana use.

As noted in the report, 30,000 qualified signatures must be verified in order for the measure to be put to voters in the Aug. 19 primary.

Tim Hinterberger, a professor in the School of Medical Education at the University of Alaska Anchorage, is quoted by the AP as stating of the matter, “It’s clear that Alaskans are eager to have an opportunity to express their displeasure with the current system and make a change.”

Marijuana use was legalized in Colorado and Washington state last year.
