Japan – Toyota Motor Corp is reportedly set to begin settlement talks for hundreds of the lawsuits brought against the automobile giant over sudden acceleration issues with its vehicles. As reported by Reuters, an order by U.S. District Judge James Selna in California federal court placed lawsuits at a standstill as Toyota and the plaintiffs make an attempt to reach an agreement in the cases.

Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed against the Japanese automaker since 2009 over a purported manufacturing defect linked to a problem with the sudden acceleration of many Toyota vehicles.

Carly Schaffner, a spokeswoman for Toyota, is quoted by Reuters as saying in an emailed statement, β€œIn our view, the process will bring greater efficiency to the resolution of pending cases and provide a clear path forward for those claims that cannot be resolved outside of trial.”

The settlement process will reportedly begin in February.
