Philadelphia – A Roman Catholic high school has received backlash over the firing of a teacher over his plans to marry his same-sex partner. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), thousands took to social media and signed petitions seeking the rehiring of Michael Griffin at the Holy Ghost Preparatory School.

Administrators at the school have stated that it had no choice but to terminate Griffin’s employment due to church teachings, which do not sanction same-sex unions. A statement from the school is quoted as stating, “All of us, including Mr. Griffin, understood that his decision would place him in violation of his contract.”

One protest letter signed by parents, alums, and former staff members is quoted as stating of Griffin’s firing, “Griffin deserves to be congratulated on his upcoming nuptials, not banished for making the news public.”

Griffin taught Spanish and French at the school for 12 years.
