Alaska – A mother who was on board a crashed plane who called for help resuscitating her baby led rescuers to the site of the wreckage afterwards. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Melanie Coffee, 25, of Mountain Village walked to meet searchers a mile in the cold and fog after the crash on Friday.

Saint Marys Village Police Officer Fred Lamont Jr., who was one of many responders to the scene is quoted as stating of Coffee, “I believe she’s the real hero in this.”

Four people were killed in the crash and six others sustained injuries. The pilot, and Coffee’s 5-month-old son Wyatt were among those who died.

The cause of the crash has yet to be determined according to NTSB Investigator Clint Johnson.
