Santa Ana, California – Itzcoatl Ocampo, a man who recently died awaiting trial for murder ate Ajax cleanser, according to his attorney. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Ocampo’s lawyer, Michael Molfetta, said on Friday that his death raises questions regarding Ocampo’s supervision by Orange County jail deputies.

Ocampo, 25, was a former Marine who was awaiting trial in the deaths of six people, including four homeless men. He purportedly collected the cleanser slowly while he was in custody. He was found in his cell last week vomiting and shaking, and pronounced dead the following day at a hospital. An autopsy is pending.

Molfetta is quoted by the AP as stating, “If you spend three minutes with Ocampo, you are acutely aware of the fact that he has some mental issues. They were severe and they were obvious and they definitely were not contrived… This was a guy who should have garnered the highest level of scrutiny.”

An investigation into the death is pending.
